  • Are you married?
If you are married or plan on getting married it is important that you have "Spousal Coverage" to protect your spouse if she rides with you on the bike.
  • Do you have health insurance?
If an accident happens that is NOT someone else's fault, how will you pay your medical expenses?  Consider a "Medical Payments" provision in your policy, if you have no other way to cover medical expenses that occur as a result of an accident.
  • Does your bike have extras/ alter-market parts?
Make sure you have enough coverage for and "extra stuff" that is on the bike, because your standard policy may not cover it.  Talk to your agent about the value of your extras and make sure there is coverage in the event they get destroyed.
  • MOST IMPORTANT - DO YOU HAVE ENOUGH INSURANCE COVERAGE IN THE EVENT YOU ARE INJURED BY SOMEONE ELSE'S FAULT ., AND THAT PERSON HAS LOW INSURANCE?

New York State only requires drivers to carry $25,000 of insurance to pay people (including bikers) who are hurt in an accident. Because damages including lost wages, medical expenses, and money for pain and suffering) could easily exceed $25,000, an injured biker may not be fully compensated, even when the accident is someone else's fault.

WHAT IS THE ANSWER?

You need to make sure you have enough insurance to cover yourself in the event of an accident. Don't rely on the other driver's insurance, because it might not be enough. Ask your insurance agent for:
  1. Supplemental Under- Insured Motorist coverage (SUM).  If your agent doesn't agree that you need it. go somewhere else!  It's  recommend at least $250,000.00 of SUM coverage for anybody who regularly rides a motorcycle.
  2. Also recommended obtaining "Single Limit Coverage" when possible.
